General dentistry

The term general dentistry refers to the dental treatments which focus on protecting your teeth and ensuring you maintain a good standard of oral health. At our dental surgery we understand the importance of having exemplary dental health, which is why we offer the full range of general dental treatments for our patients.

If you have not visited our practice before, you will be invited to have a initial appointment with our dentist in Orpington which will consist of us carrying out a thorough examination of your teeth, mouth and gums along with obtaining both your medical and dental history, whilst also giving you a chance to tell us about any dental issues you are currently dealing with.

Should we identify through our examination that you are in need of further treatment, you will be referred to one of our treatment coordinators who will provide you with a detailed treatment plan and will answer any questions you may have before starting any procedures.

If you have been experiencing sensitive teeth or you have noticed your gums are either tender or swollen, you may have an inflamed or infected pump, this will probably lead to you having root canal treatment.

Root canal treatment

If your pulp has been damaged, a root canal is the best dental treatment to ensure your remaining tooth structure remains healthy without resorting to having your tooth removed.

For this treatment, our dentist in Orpington will first make an opening in the crown of the tooth which has the infected pulp. This is in order for our dentist in Orpington to remove the pulp. Once this has been completed, the root canal is then cleaned and shaped in order for it to be formed for sealing. The root canal is usually filled with a material known as gutta - percha. This material is heated and compressed into the tooth’s canal and in order to seal this, an adhesive is used.

The root canal treatment is then completed and your tooth is able to be restored by using a permanent solution such as a crown or filling in order for your tooth to get back to full functionality. Immediately after treatment, it is important that you do not chew or bite on that area until the tooth has completely healed.

In order to ensure your replacement tooth and treated root canal lasts for as long as possible, you are advised to maintain a good oral hygiene regime.
